The Calgary Zoo says its two year old western lowland gorilla, Eyare who died a few weeks earlier was due to an accident resulting from human error.

According to the zoo, a thorough investigation was conducted to fully understand what happened. “This included reviews by internal and external experts, interviews with staff, hydraulic door testing by our Building Operations and Animal Care, Health and Welfare teams, collaboration with our Environment, Health and Safety team, input from members of the AZA primate community, and assessment by our Veterinary team.”

“Our findings determined that Eyare’s death was a tragic accident resulting from human error”, says Calgary Zoo. “We do not take these findings lightly. We are continuing a detailed review to identify any potential opportunities to enhance staff training and improve animal care processes, ensuring the highest standards of safety for the animals in our care.”

Eyare, a female western lowland gorilla, died at the Wilder Institute/ Calgary Zoo. His death occured last Tuesday, at around 9am. A gorilla care team member wanted to separate Eyare from the other animals for an individual training session, when the worker mistakenly activated the wrong door.

Colleen Baird, zoo director of animal care, health and welfare, said the gorilla was mistakenly struck by the door, leading to traumatic head injuries. The gorilla team retrieved Eyare and immediately attempted life-saving measures, but the gorilla succumbed to her injuries.

Eyare was born at the zoo on April 20, 2022, the first offspring of Dossi and Jasiri.
