There is no true handbook to being a good parent as the need of one child differs from the other. However, there some general rules that will definitely help in raising children effectively. You need to understand that as a parent, you do not have to be perfect. Perfection is not the way to define a good parent. The way to be a good parent is working towards being better every day, for yourself, and your kids.

These few tips will help you on the way to being a better parent.

  • Physical Attention: Love your children and show them that you love them. What is the best way to do this than physical attention? Spend quality time with them, there is nothing your child would like more than knowing you are readily available to them. Have family meals together, create time to do the things they love and look for ways to connect.
  • Be a Good Role Model: Kids always notice everything you do, they start to consciously or unconsciously emulate you. Watch what you do and how you react to things around them. Model the traits you wish to see in them, be the person you want them to be.
  • Discipline: Discipline is an important aspect of being a good parent. In order for them to grow into responsible adults, you must establish some house rules and stick with it. Practice gentle but firm parenting.
  • Communication: This is very important in every relationship, parenting inclusive. Talk with your kids, take the time to listen to them. They won’t do everything simply because you said so. Reason with them and make them understand why some things should be the way they are.
  • Know your limits and weaknesses: Accept that you are sometimes wrong and you also have strength and weaknesses. Take the time to breathe so that you can give your kids the best. You don’t have to be perfect, recognize your abilities and work on your weaknesses. Focusing on your needs doesn’t make you selfish, it simply means you care about your well-being which is an important value in raising your kids.
