Camilla, Queen Consort of England has cancelled the centuries-long traditional title of “ladies-in-waiting” changing it to “Queen’s companions” instead. The position is for helping the Queen Consort at public events.
The refashioned title of the six women assistants has also seen their roles slightly altered. The new role will require them to make less frequent appearances than before and they will not be assisting in correspondence or administration.
The companions will occasionally serve informal duties as they accompany the Queen Consort at official engagements, along with her private secretary or deputy private secretary. The Queen’s companions will not be paid salaries, but their expenses will be covered.
Usually, the ladies are picked from the aristocratic, titled and wealthy classes of the United Kingdom. According to USA Today, some of the ladies will accompany the Queen Consort for the first time on Tuesday, when she hosts a reception at Buckingham Palace to raise awareness of violence against women and girls as part of the UN 16 days of activism against gender-based violence.
ET Canada reports that the former ladies-in-waiting will now serve King Charles, helping him host events at Buckingham Palace and will be addressed as “ladies of the household.”
