The King of England, King Charles III, declared the heir to the throne and his first son, Prince William, Prince of Wales in his first official speech after the Queen death. Prince Williams’ wife, Kate, was also declared Princess of Wales. The title is officially held by the heir to the throne. King Charles III was the former Prince of Wales, until his mothers’ death. He held the title since age nine.
However, a petition was posted on Change.org, by Trystan Gruffydd, who argued that the Prince of Wales title emasculates Wales as a country by suggesting that it is still a principality. The petition partly reads that “The title implies that Wales is still a principality, undermining Wales’ status as a nation and a country”.
“The title has been exclusively held by Englishmen as a symbol of dominance over Wales”. The title was described as a slur to Wales and “a symbol of historical oppression”.
The last time a Welsh born held the title of Prince of Wales was in 1282, which was 740 years ago. He was Llywelyn Ap Gruffudd the Last and he was killed by English soldiers in the Conquest of Wales. Afterwards, the title went to the Prince at the Edward II, bestowed upon him by his father Edward I.
