Following the death of his mother, Prince Charles ascended the throne as King Charles III. The King ascended the throne Thursday, September 8, after Queen Elizabeth II died peacefully in her Balmoral estate in Scotland.
The King and his wife, Camilla, Queen Consort arrived the palace amid cheering crowds. The new Monarch greeted and waved at the well-wishers while some people in the crowd professed love for the new king. Some people could be heard singing “God save our gracious King” the first line of the British national anthem.
King Charles III is the longest serving British monarch-in-waiting and the oldest to ascend the throne at age 73, after a lifetime of preparation. Gun salutes have been raised across the UK as Britain mourns the death of the longest serving Monarch, Queen Elizabeth II.
The king is set to address the nation and commonwealth, says a royal statement. The Royal standard flag has been raised in Buckingham palace to indicate the presence of King Charles III.
The newly appointed Prime Minister, who was sworn in on Tuesday by the Queen before her death, Liz Truss, has also arrived in the palace to meet King Charles III.
