Rapper Daystar Shemuel Peterson, known professionally as Tory Lanez has been convicted of assault with a semi-automatic firearm, having loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle and discharging a firearm with gross negligence. These could lead to up to 22 years in prison, reports Sky News.
The charges related to the 2020 shooting of hip-hop star, Megan Thee Stallion that left her wounded with bullet fragments in her feet. This happened after they both left a pool party. Lanez showed no visible reaction as the verdict was delivered.
The Canadian rapper was remanded in court and is due to be sentenced on January 27. According to BBC, Megan Thee Stallion, whose real name is Meghan Pete testified that she was wounded at the party in the Hollywood Hills on 12, July 2020.
The rapper said that Lanez became furious when she mocked his musical talent. She said he fired a handgun at her feet and shouted for her to dance as she moved away from the car. In her testimony, she revealed that Lanez had offered her $1m to stay quiet about the attack, claiming he was on probation for a weapons offense.
Lanez denied the charges and his lawyer alleged that it was Meghan Thee Stallion’s friend, Kelsey Harris, who fired the shot during a “jealousy fight.” “She lied about everything in the case from the beginning,” he said.
Megan Thee Stallion had to go through surgery to remove the bullet fragments, but some remain.
