Five Iranian Girls Arrested for Dancing to Rema’s Calm Down

The video went viral on Tuesday and the ladies have been arrested for not wearing headscarf.

Five young Iranian ladies who danced to Nigerian Afrobeat Singer Divine Ikubor, known professionally as Rema’s viral song ‘Calm Down’ have been arrested.

The video of the five girls went viral on Tuesday for dancing without headscarves. The women were dancing, with their stomachs slightly revealed, near high-rise building in the Tehran residential district of Ekbatan to the song.

The video was widely circulated on all social media during the international women’s day on March 8.  Report says the women were arrested and forced into making a video expressing their regret.

Activists from the Ekbatan area first reposted the video on Telegram and Twitter. According to The Times of Isreal, authorities were asking residents in the area if they knew the ladies, based on the footage.

Reacting to the news, Rema tweeted “to all the beautiful women who are fighting for a better world, I’m inspired by you, I sing for you and I dream with you.”

It is illegal for women to dance in public or not cover their hair in the Islamic republic.
