The former US President says he expects to be arrested on Tuesday over an alleged hush-money payment to a porn star, Stormy Daniels in 2016, and he has urged his supporters to protest. Prosecutors are reportedly looking at possible indictment.
“Leading Republican candidate & former President of the United States of America will be arrested on Tuesday of next week. Protest, take our nation back”, Trump said on his Truth Social platform.
If he is indicted, this would make Trump the first former US President to be charged with a crime. Although, he has pledged to continue his campaign to become the Republican nominee in the 2024 presidential election, even if he is indicted.
An indictment could have major consequences, inciting criticism while at the same time garnering more support from his enthusiasts. According to BBC reports, past efforts to investigate him, including two impeachment trials, the Russia investigation and the Mar-a-Lago raid, is inclined to make him more popular and an indictment could have similar result.
Report says it is not yet known if Trump would be criminally charged this week, or what he might be charged with. The Republican Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy reacted to the investigation calling it “an outrageous abuse of power by a radical district attorney.”
Susan Necheles, Trump’s lawyer said “since this is a political prosecution, the district attorney’s office has engaged in a practice of leaking everything to the press, rather than communicating with president Trump’s attorneys as would be done in a normal case.”
