Alberta Emergency Test to Take Place on Wednesday to Mark the Start of Wildfire Season

The alerts will be heard across all platforms.

On Wednesday, March 1 at 1:55pm, the Alberta Emergency Alert system will be heard across the province on Television, Radio, websites, social media, the Alberta Emergency Alert mobile app, and directly to Albertans via compatible cellphones.

Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Services Mike Ellis says “While test alerts are issued nationwide twice a year in May and November, this year’s emergency alert in Alberta is being done now to coincide with the official start of wildlife season on March 1.”

“Tests help us fix any system issues to ensure alerts work when we need them”, said Ellis. “Tests also provide a valuable opportunity for Albertans to consider their own readiness to respond to an unexpected event like a wildlife.”

According to Ellis, the phone alerts will only work if your cellphone is compatible, and is on an LTE 4G network or connected to WIFI. He said “if your cellphone is set on silent, it will display an emergency alert but will not play the alert tone.”

Alberta Emergency Alert is a public warning system used by the province to warn the public on imminent dangers affecting an area. According to Global News, the wildfire season runs from March 1 to Oct. 31 in Alberta. The provincial government said nearly all spring wildfires are human-caused, making them 100% avoidable, reports Global News.
